    Hello PC,

I come seeking advice. I live in Los Angeles with an 05 prius, and recently got the hybrid battery pack error. After doing some shopping around and research (on PC as well :) ), I've narrowed it down to 3 possible solutions. Any advice on making the choice would be greatly appreciated!

    1. $1795/Hybrid Battery Repair- these guys get Gen III battery packs from Priuses that have been in accidents/whatever other reason with somewhere between 20k to 40k miles on them, and repack into the 05 box. Sounds good as long as they're not lying about the condition of the batteries. 4yr/60k warranty.

    2. $1995/The Hybrid Shop- uses a $50k machine to recharge all modules back up to 19v. Will replace modules with less than 10v charge. Sounds fishy to me after doing research on reconditioning... 3yr/100k warranty

    3. $2800/Dealer- yep... just expensive T.T

Does anyone have any experience with these options? Could use advice! Thank you.

Based upon your statement, I'll pick option "one"..............
Are this exchange or outright prices?
    Do these include installation?

these are outright prices, installation included. option one also covers travel... they'll come to my car and do it in about 2 hours per yelp.

over. i just called Toyota Corporate as JC91006 recommended to see if I can qualify for a goodwill warranty, but they said nah. vehicle too old.

**i also realize i posted thread in the wrong forums... should be in gen2 chat T.T sorry folks.

$2,800 for a battery with NEW cells from a dealer is actually a pretty good price.Dealer warranty is 3 years, but it will likely last as long as the original pack if not longer. .

As opposed to possibly buying a 7 year old used set of batteries. (Gen 3 includes the 2010 Prius). No way a used set of batteries will last as long as a new pack.

It depends how much longer you plan to have the car and what time is worth to you.

Option 1 guarantees the battery for 4 years. Given they're using batteries from 2010-2015 Prii, that seems reasonable
Option 2 is likely to fail in a year or two, so I'd avoid it
Option 3 should last 10 years or more, but it's only worth the extra money if you plan to own the car significantly longer than the 4 year guarantee of option 1

Click on the Report button, and ask 'em to move it to second gen maintenance forum.

I'd go with #3, the Toyota dealership installed price, because it's not that far, it will be a brand new battery, and they will for sure be around to honour it. That's me, it really depends on how much that means to you.

I don't think $2800 is a new battery. I think it's the refurbished one. He is in the California test market for that battery

Could the battery the dealership is offering be brand new cells in a refurb case? That would be worth something more than a complete refurb, cells and all.

FWIW, there was another member here a few months back got the Toyota battery at that price level, and was able to take peek inside, determined the cells were used as well, were a bit of a jumble, had hand lettering and notations on some. He was misled at the outset: the parts guy (likely honestly) thought it was all-new.

Maybe someone recalls better, can link the thread.

I believe the one @Mendel Leisk is referring to is located in the Gen 2 section:

I believe the Toyota refurbished battery is not new modules, it's just a factory backed refurbished battery. Not worth it for $2800. Dorman is half that

Well, if all 3 of the options are used or remanufactured, the best choice would be whichever uses the most recent battery.

However, none of them are likely going to last anywhere near as long as a brand new battery.

In that case, as long as the Toyota refurb wasn't preposterously more, I'd go with them because they're for sure going to be there down the road, the maintenance record would be more complete, and hopefully they have better procedures and quality control.

Somewhat unrelated, I'm looking for recommendations as to which dealership I should bring my car to for replacement of the hybrid battery. The cost will be covered by insurance, so price isn't the main factor.

My car got broken into and they stole the hybrid battery and made a big mess of things. I'd be looking to get the whole car checked out, so I'm looking for recs for a reliable and thorough service department.
