LOL! I guess you were being concise and beat me to it while I was being verbose. ;)

I was going to say your version sounds a lot better. Mine sounds like I'm practicing for a new career, as an oracle. :ROFLMAO:

Remember the "Eight Ball?" That could be a good handle for a new member who likes to give really short answers that may or may not be correct.

Edit to add: Of course yours are always correct afaik. ;)

The gen1 Prius was a small sedan between the Echo and Corolla. For Japanese incentives, the Echo was treated as the ICE equivalent.

It came out in 1997 for Japan only. It started out using off the shelf cylindrical battery cells. For the mid-cycle refresh, Toyota switched to the prismatic cells the model now has, and bumped the ICE performance a little. This is really no different than another model getting a new engine or transmission at the same time, but Prius fans like calling this a gen1.5 in order to start the confusion. This is the model that was exported.

The designers may have wanted the gen1 to be a hatch like the later ones, but someone higher up called for a sedan. A trunk lid might have been a lower cost option to a Kammback with split rear window.

Another noteworthy fact of the gen1 is that it had the turtle mode; named for the info light. This was when the battery was completely tapped. The engine output alone wasn't enough, and there was a noticable drop in performance.

It goes back to the PiP, when Toyota and everybody else treated it like a separate model instead of a plug in trim of the gen3 that it truly was.

Maybe I'll put on my newly acquired PIP rims, and print out a charger door decal.

Also, Toyota USA does not consider it a car. There are no hybrids under their car menu. Apparently a hybrid is some other kind of vehicle.

Toyota Canada lists them under both, which is nice. (e.g. the Prius is listed both under "Cars & Minvans" as well as "Hybrids")

Thanks. I just had to replace the one in my Gen2 and it was a chore.

Be glad it wasn't my son's Intrepid. I think it was about a 2000 or maybe a little earlier. We had to remove the right front wheel and part of the inner fender skirting. Stupidest design I ever saw. The engine finally sludged itself to death because the oil return hole on the driver's side head was at the high end, so oil just sat in there and cooked and he probably didn't change it often enough to make up for that design mistake.

Happy hunting. Hope you find a gem.

I don't understand the comments that the 12V battery in the hatch is difficult to replace. I find it easy, though hard on my back because it's so low. But I'm rather old. ;)

Took me an hour and 15 minutes to replace mine in my 2004. The battery itself isn't that hard to get to, it's getting it unmounted and the new one mounted. There's an opportunity to drop bolts down the fender and the locations are that easy to get to so you have to be really, really careful.
