    Hi All,

I'm trying to form a maintenance battle plan to with the intent of keeping my 2011 Toyota Prius to 300k miles. Driven on long highway trips & daily driver for my wife. Anything in the list (or not in the list but should be) that catches your eyes?

    Thanks a bunch!

    -kehyler

    • Check fluid levels every 2 months or 5k miles
    • Rotate tires every 5k miles
    • Change engine oil with 0w-20 M1 HM synthetic every 7.5k miles or 12 months using Toyota 04152YZZA6 or Fram TG10358
    • Car washes during the winter every 1 month
    • Replace engine and cabin air filter every 30k miles or 3 years
    • Transaxle fluid every 50k miles or 5 years using oem fluid
    • Engine & inverter coolant every 80k miles or 6 years
    • Spark plugs every 60k miles or 10 years
    • Brake fluid every 60k miles or 4 years

    see @NutzAboutBolts youtube videos(y)

exhaust gas recirculation, gets plugged up with oil/sludge, back pressure, blown head gasket

also research 'oil catch can' @danlatu

Coolant and spark plugs can last till 120k miles, the earliest I would change would be 100k Miles. Changing any earlier than that is a waste of money. IMHO, but it is your car so (y)

    I recommend:

Check fluid once a week, takes less than 10 seconds; 3 jugs + 1 dip stick.
    5K OCI w/Toyota Synthetic 0w-20 w/Toyota oem filter

And I agree w/the rest of the other recommendations posted by others

Your list looks good to me with the addition of the EGR.

If you are burning oil, like me and many others, change your sparkies early. After changing mine, I noticed an improvement in MPGs, smoother acceleration and idling. I just changed mine, and she feels new like the day I bought her!

    Not a bad list.
But I think the key to keeping and having a vehicle last until 300K is the desire to keep and operate a vehicle to 300K.
So ultimately that includes willingness to invest into any repairs that may arise. And unfortunately even the best of maintenance battle plans, won't keep some things from just happening or wearing out.

But from a preventative standpoint? That's a perfectly comprehensive list.

If you at all care about long term paint finish quality, I would at LEAST recommend a once or twice a year formal hand wax, or finish protection regiment. Either do it yourself or by a formal detailer.

I don't know if you meant once a month hand washing of the vehicle or once a month drive-thru or automated car washes during the winter. Which is a good idea to avoid road salt damage, potential rust. BUT....

Automated car washes, especially drive thru's, are a trade off. They can scratch and be tough on finishes. I've gotten older and now it's a deal with the devil, I find myself using automated car washes far more than I would of in the past.
Hand washing is better, but tough in the winter, and really doesn't add any long term finish protection.

If you are using automated car washes? I'd REALLY recommend keeping a layer of finish protection on the vehicle.

Engine oil level I would check more frequently, at least every fill up. Seems like a lot of reports, of overnight oil consumption starting. When there's no consumption, you can get complacent, then get caught.

Your call. That's better than Toyota USA's stance, on the miles. Toyota Canada says every 5K miles or 6 months, for 3rd gen.

Which I like. I use the Toyota 0W20, and filter. Always change the drain bolt washer. Maybe overkill, but DIY so doesn't cost me much, gives me something to do. We're months well ahead of miles, don't care, stick with it.

Fourth gen they've aligned with US schedule, 10K miles or yearly, meh.

What do you mean by car wash? Thorough hand wash, running it through an automated car wash, somewhere in between? I like to wax, spring and fall, handwash infrequently.

Big question: where the heck is "blah"? How's the weather there...

I would also check the underside, especially depending on "blah" location. Do they salt the roads in winter, in "blah"?

Many suspension components (and bolts) are very rust prone. Most recently I've been trying a coating of boiled linseed oil, seems quite effective.

I would inspect them, replace only as needed.

You pretty much can't do a first change to soon. Year one, 10K miles is fine for a first change. I've found the drained fluid appearance gets progressively cleaner, with each subsequent change. Seems like you could double (or triple) the interval every time.

Toyota USA advocates 100K miles or 10 years for first engine coolant change, 150K miles or 15 years for first inverter coolant change, then 50K miles or 5 years subsequently, for both.

Yeah kinda premature. Just follow Toyota recommendation?

Not a bad idea. Toyota Canada advocates periodic changes. Yeah watch the @NutzAboutBolts video on this. I'll post the Repair Manual info.

Yup, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation circuit cleaning, mentioned above. Watch @NutzAboutBolts video. Ditto for intake manifold cleaning, and Oil Catch Can install. I'll attach some more Repair Manual info. Also, some good threads:

Wait a sec, missed that: does "HM" stand for high mileage? I would not start using that unless you have a certified oil guzzler, in a last ditch effort to reduce consumption.

"High Mileage" is a euphemism for "rubber swelling", that's all it's doing, basically swelling any rubber parts inside the engine, the valve guides mainly. Going to "High Mileage" oil is somewhat akin to a terminal cancer patient taking to morphine.

And it's just as "addictive". Once you're using it, switching back to regular oil, the valve guides will shrink, with a vengeance, and oil consumption will be worse than at the outset.

300k miles? I'd suggest driving it around on a vehicle trailer pulled by a Gen2. These Gen3's are the worst.

    Hi All,

I decided to add the following items based on this thread:
    • Clean EGR + intake manifold every 60k or 7 years
    • Extend plug interval to 80k, 10 years
    • Fluid check every 1k miles or 1 months

Yeah, HM stands for high mileage. Modern high mileage ratings aren't really "swelling" rather conditioning. ILSAC 5 GF-5 oils have requirements on the effects on rubber including volume change. I'm not worried about it.

Caliper lube every 36,000 mi/every 3 years or suffer the brag drag and rotor damage.

Marketing gimmicks gotcha. Conditioning of rubber seals is swelling.

    ^From the above.

"Now, OEM test requirements for seal compatibility have been incorporated into the ILSAC GF-5 standard. Testing is done with five commonly used seal materials (see Table 1). The seal materials are immersed into hot oil for 336 hours and then evaluated for changes in volume, hardness and tensile strength."

    Mobile 1 0W-20 passes (
Mobil 1™ Extended Performance High Mileage | Mobil™ Motor Oils
), so in the absence of data showing me that seal "swelling" is a real issue, I won't worry myself about it. Of course, other people will draw different conclusions.
