Good on you for buying a legit dongle.

Then of course you have the choice about going legit with Techstream itself (looks like the two-day sub is currently $70). If you go that route, of course, just use the official download when you sign up.

    Lord in heaven.

I bought a $130 Foxwell scan tool for my BMW that scans all the BMW codes, actuates all devices for testing, and datalogs. I am not going to pay Toyota $35/day to diag my 14-year-old Prius. Any other suggestions?

Lots of people here use downloads from other places, so I'm sure they'll be around and see your post and have those other suggestions.

Xtools D8 is under $500.00. And it works with other vehicles also, no just toyota.

The “free” Techstream is an illegal hack with instructions to keep offline at all times. Typically installed on a beater xp or win7 laptop.

No ability to flash configurations or ecus but that is rarely needed. Also eliminates the concurrent online documentation and links.

    Hola
    We each have our opinions.

Mine is that every car should come with full diagnostic software and diagnostic tools included.

You can buy a “mini VCI cable” on eBay or Amazon for around $20

It comes with a hacked version of Techstream. The hack is that the expiration date is set to 40 years from now or some such.
Of course you don’t log on to Toyota.
Sometimes you have to get some help replacing the hacked file. It’s easy.

I use my regular W10 laptop. Others suggest an old dedicated laptop. Also cheap if you do that.

Compared to fixing the easiest thing on a Prius, getting Techstream set up is a walk in the park.

Thanks all for the input. I appreciate it.

I'm also of the opinion that $35/day to work on my car is outrageous. That should be class action lawsuit territory.

Nah, it’s just the manufacturer trying to make more money. The free market solved the problem
