i think you have a different problem draining the battery. maybe just defective like some of the earlier posts here, but, when you make the car ready, it basically eliminates the 12v as a potential killer.

I have a scanguage connected and while the traction Battery is charging the 12 volt battery is not being charged it sits at about 12.6 volts, when the traction Battery is done charging and the car is in ready mode the 12 volt Battery level shoots up to 14.1 volts and stays there until the 12 volt Battery is fully charged and goes back to 12.6 volts

i wonder why they changed it from pip. maybe because they moved the battery 15' away?

Got a jump start for my car. This worked to get it running. However, the engine check light was now lit. Took the car to the Toyota dealer who ran diagnostics and got the following message: Code C1241 Low or High Power Supply Voltage. The tech reset the code, and cleared the light. No charge, the car is still under warranty.

I asked the service rep if one could not preheat the car while it was plugged into the charging cable. After a few minutes research, he came up with the following from the user manual:
    • The hybrid system will not start while the charging cable is attached to the vehicle, even if the power switch is operated
    • If the charging cable is connected while the "READY" indicator is illuminated, the hybrid system will stop automatically and driving will not be possible.
What this comes down to is that if you have the car plugged in and start the engine to run the defroster, heater, or the air conditioner then the car will turn itself off, and totally shut down meaning it will not turn on, no lights, no signs of power whatsoever and no way to restart with getting a jump start.

I understand that Toyota would not want you to drive away while plugged into power, but it seems like their are alternative strategies not necessitating a call for emergency service.

I don't know if they changed it or it worked the same on the PIP as it does on the Prime, I should have paid attention when I had my PIP.

someone with a scanguage and a PIP should be able to verify this

pip charges the 12v at the same time as the hv battery. not to the extent of the inverter though. 13+ volts as i recall.
scan gauge not needed, i just put my volt meter on the jump point while charging.
wouldn't surprise me if toyota took a look at the run for the charge port to the 12v, multiplied that x 20,000 cars a year and nixed it.
it's a nice feature, but not really necessary. added value, but most buyers are clueless.

scan gauge plugs in underneath steering wheel, voltmeter needs to be connected by going into the rear of the car opening the battery compartment and fumbling with the test leads.

If you measured PIP 12 volt before and after hybrid battery charging, and voltage was higher after, that'd be conclusive I think.

No jump point under the hood on the PiP?

Ok, so there's a jump point under the hood, I still think the scanguage method is easier, IMHO

That depends. Are you more likely to already have a voltmeter or a Scanguage?

Why do you need to start the engine to run the electric heat pump & fan?? The Heat pump does not use engine heat.

the heat pump runs off the hybrid battery like a/c. you need to be in ready, but do not need the engine. that's the genius fo ev driving in cold weather. much more efficient than resistance heat.

however, this cannot be done while charging. you cannot pre heat the cabin while plugged in.

You can run the heat pump to cool a hot battery when plugged in but cannot heat the cabin with the same heat pump? I remember reading prompts to turn on cooling while charging.

I have two scanguages top one for volts mpg mph and inside temperature

The Bottom one is tire pressure

And I have a Fluke multi meter

You can turn on the front defroster while plugged in but then the charging time becomes much longer due to the traction Battery warning or cooling the cabin for that small amount of time that the car is on while plugged in

you can precondition the battery warm/cool, but not the cabin

actually, the cabin is what gets cooled which indirectly cools the battery:cool:

right, imagine what a separate battery cooling system would cost? oh yeah, that's liquid thermal management like the good cars have.
but not so for heat. don't ask me why, when you got 240v sizzling away at the charger. cheaper to put some resistive strips in the battery i suppose.

    volt managed to do it
