The important thing is whether or not it will fit. This duracell is 9.65" x 6.85" x 8.78" high. The battery in my Prime is 8" x 6.5" x about 7" high. Looks like the Duracell won't fit. I suggest you measure yours and take those dimensions with you when you look for a replacement. Don't worry about CCA (cold cranking amps) as that isn't a concern here.

As @Washingtonian kindly points out, that’s a BCI Group 35 battery, 230 × 175 × 225 mm (L × W × H), which is longer and taller than the 207 × 175 × 190 mm size used on fourth-generation Prius and Prius Prime cars. I think “H4” in the seller’s description refers not to the battery itself, but to the horizontally-opposed, four-cylinder engine found on many Subaru vehicles.

The AutoZone store at 1515 N. Alvarado Street in Los Angeles still supposedly has their Duralast H4-DL (first mentioned here in November 2017) in stock for $129.99 plus tax and refundable core charge. The O’Reilly 140RPRM is also available at the same price.

If Elektroingenieur great recommendation of a group size 140R battery was not locally available, I'd go with this as another cost saving alternative:

After looking at some other options, here's a battery group size that would fit at the reasonable price point of about ~$112 OTD if purchased from Napa Auto parts & Amazon.

A group size 151R battery will fit inside the Primes battery box, the main fitment issue when searching for an alternative battery is the Primes battery box length which is only 8.366" long; this 8.366" length represents the MAXIMUM length a 12v battery can be & still fit.

The base/bottom of a 151R battery is about ~7 1/16" L x ~4 3/4" W so it will absolutely fit into the Primes battery box. The one issue with the base of a 151R battery is that it does not use the Toyota mounting system, so a universal 12v battery top mount would be needed. In order to use a universal 12v battery top mount, two small 3/16" or 1/4" holes would need to be drilled into the base of the Primes plastic battery box so the "J Hook" of the universal top mount could be attached.

Performance wise a Napa 151R 12v battery has:
    1) CC 410 Amps
    2) CCA 335 Amps
    3) 19 LBS
    4) Positive & Negative terminals
in the correct position for easy hookup

Napa Auto Parts 151R Battery, $103
    www.napaonline.com/en/p/NBP65151R
(Walmart has a 151R battery, but unfortunately it's more expensive at $120)

Amazon Universal 12v Battery Hold Down, ~$9 shipped.

Cool! Let me know what batteries you guys find that would work. I'll do some research and keep looking and look into the recommendations from you guys. Thanks again for all the help everyone!

So 140R is the size I should be researching not H4?

Also 151 would work but I would need the J hook and to drill some holes.

Didn't realize it could be so confusing haha

I think some stores say it's in stock but not in CA.

Also, I wasn't sure about the quality and name brand of the batteries. Does that matter?

    The Duralast battries are unavailable.

    Are Napa batteries good?

    Too big I think.

Anyone hear an ETA on when Optima might make a Prius Prime replacement 12 V battery available?

Considering my replacement battery on a BMW cost me $160, $176 is not a great price for a Toyota 12v, assuming it’s lead acid which I think it is.

Well, when the time comes for my PRIME to be needing 12v battery replaced, I am going to insist on getting it installed for $99 battery special at my Toyota dealer. @bisco thinks it can not be done, but I have a hunch it can be negotiated.;)

That coupon specifically excludes hybrids, but if there’s an open recall on the car they will usually negotiate. I was able to negotiate a half price alignment when I agreed to bring 2 open recalls to my dealer. Money talks.

It doesn't exclude it, it just says "Toyota & Scion only. Hybrid vehicles extra." By "extra", I think they are figuring the higher cost of AGM batteries in earlier Prius. Knowing after market batteries are priced ~$120, I am pretty sure there is a room for negotiation. If they don't agree, I will just buy aftermarket one from local auto-shop down the street and install it DIY. Then again, I don't understand why PRIME's 12v is so prone to early demise.

Me either. Either too much draw when off, defective charging system or bad batch, which may explain lack of oem availability

Why not? It appears battery for my Camry ranges in price from $100 to $190. The battery in a hybrid is far smaller than the one in an ICE car. In the US, this means the on hand supply is going to be smaller than that of batteries used in dozens of models over multiple brands. Smaller supply means higher price.

What I find so interesting / eyeopening about this thread is all the talk about the possibility of premature 12v battery failure on the Prime.

I think I'm going to add a set of my Maxwell super capacitors to my existing OE battery...

I wonder how Toyota warrants its 12V battery. I looked in the warranty book but it is not specifically mentioned. The batteries sold by Costco are warranted for 36 months at 100% refund or replacement; after that it is pro rated starting at 60%, 50% etc. It is based on time only, no mileage is considered. I suspect this is standard practice in the industry. Has anyone specifically asked Toyota to specify the warranty on the 12V battery on a new car?

The 3yr/36k new vehicle warranty covers the battery as far as I know. Alignment is only covered for 1yr/12k.

No, it’s not; it’s regrettable to see incorrect information on a dealer’s website. As I explained last March, that’s Toyota’s service part number, in the U.S., for the auxiliary battery for third-generation and some older Prius cars, which is a physically larger size (designation S46B24R, 238 × 129 × 227 mm). It’s also an AGM battery, rather than the flooded (wet cell) type used on current models.

For the fourth-generation Prius and Prius Prime, the correct Toyota service part number for an auxiliary battery, in the U.S., is 00544-H4052-470, as listed in Toyota’s own battery application chart (PDF).
See my previous posting about this.
I think they all would. As I linked in post #6, the NAPA BAT 75140R has been confirmed to work in a 2016 Prius, which uses the same original battery as the Prius Prime.
H4 is one designation, but you have to be careful that it refers to the battery, not to something else. If there is a BCI group number listed, it should be 140R.
Did you ask an AutoZone store about this? Their website does a very poor job of helping you buy one, unless you happen to select a store where it’s in stock.
Especially for less-common sizes, it’s unlikely that the battery was made by the company whose trademark appears on its label. If I had to buy a replacement 12-volt battery for a Prius or Prius Prime, once I found the right size, I’d be concerned only with price, availability, and perhaps the seller’s warranty.
