Heads up on the oil filter. I went to replace the oil and filter today and to my surprise on my 2017 Prime Plus with a build date of 11/17 has a spin on oil filter.

Wow, I didn't know there was a spin on option.

    Made in China?

I was surprised to see Toyota go to a cartridge type filter anyway. Ford went to a spin on in about 1957 not I see others are using the cartridge again.

Just out of curiosity why did you get rid of a 2016 to buy a 2017, did you just want a prime?

I'd rather have a cartridge oil filter. Only complaint is they shouldn't cost more than a spin on.

Yep. Wanted the electric range and electricity costs 5.2¢ kwh. No complaints about my 16 Prius 2.

    Wow, that is a shock.

I just now called the parts department again and they still say the USA 2017 Prius Prime takes a 04152-YZZA6 cartridge. I made them double check that they were looking at the 2017 Prime.

Also, look at the time stamp 1:09 on this video of a guy doing his 2017 Prius Prime Premium and you can clearly see the cartridge housing.

I have not been under my 2017 Advanced to actually look, but I certainly will before I do a change.

Has anyone else been underneath to visually verify what kind of filter they actually have in their Prime?

I also just found another video that seems to confirm what you have at 32 seconds in.

I just had my first oil change during 10K service at Toyota dealer using free Toyota Care about a month ago. Didn't check to see what kind of filter they installed. I am very curious now, for I still have brand new cartilage filters for Gen3 which I intend to use on Prime in future oil changes after Toyota Care runs out.

Just out of curiosity what was the build date of the OP Prius Prime. It would be interesting to see if cars after his build date have a spin on or cartridge filter.

Mine was built in August 2017 but I've not visually verified the type.

My Prime Premium build date was February 2017.

Also, I can verify that mine had a cartridge filter housing, although I did not change the filter, only the oil.

I didn't catch the build date and it was one of the last ones they built it looks like. It will be interesting to see how many more and what their build date is.

Please do us a favor. It will be asked by someone else if I don't. Look under your engine hood. There is a white vehicle emission sticker on the hood with TOYOTA in the upper left corner. At the bottom center, it has your engine type designation. Mine is a 2ZR-FXE. Does that match yours? If it matches, and your build date is in November, we may be seeing a mid cycle production change. What a mess, if that's true.

You guys have got to stop buying your oil filters by the case, lol.

Why would they have switched to spin-on I wonder? Cost saving, complaints from service departments? Would regular Prius also be making the switch??

We need more data and user feedback. This may be hard as most are taking advantage of the free Toyota care oil changes and have had no need to look. If we have the same engine in the same model year with two different types of oil filters, it's going to be a mess.

Does anyone know if the spin-on is backwards compatible to the cartridge filter design?
