    I guess Toyota's plan for a red wave for the mid terms leading to a roll back of humanity as we know it to the 1950's intolerance and gas guzzlers being the preferred vehicle again didn't work out as planned?

    Yup, more FUD. The change in direction and future Toyota 2026 plans for adopting a method to get to EV production.... blah, blah, blah. Typical Toyota, and pathetically sad to see a company refusing to do an about-face for a nearly a decade and a half of radical automotive industry change. Kodak.

    Toyota will survive - albeit late to the party. Whether the e-tgna platform survives may be a different matter. john1701a is gona be hard pressed to continue holding on to the 'know-your-audience' mantra - as Toyota sees world government's cattle prod intervention / anti-gas burner push.

    It's a quote from the OP article. Tesla's manufacturing cost advantage is part of the reason why Toyota has assembled this evaluation group, which they haven't done in over a decade.

    Toyota was the #1 automaker in the US for the first time ever last year, so I really don’t think they’re scrambling. They just aren’t rushing to make empty promises 10 years in advance for a little good PR. Perhaps they understand the future of the automobile is not 100% EV, and they live in the present day where well over 90% of the vehicles on the road in the US are ICE.

    It probably won't go over well here.

    Any Automaker who wants to be current and prosper better be constantly changing and evaluating market preferences.

    it's actually the opposite of that. they've already admitted that ev acceptance has happened much more quickly than they had thought only a short time ago.
    the problem for them now is picking the right direction to start again.
    they had thought it was e tgna, but are now realizing they might have to commit to all new, pure ev architecture.
    a very expensive venture that they had hoped to avoid by building another bridge to the future, e tgna.

    they won't be happy trying to capitalize all the new equipment r&d and build out, while still falling further behind the ev leaders
    but they are slowly starting to see the writing on the wall...

    It is not a trivial problem but Toyota would have been better served by researching or survey of conquest sales of former Toyota owners.

    Had they asked me, they could have learned in 2016 where we were going. Definitely in 2019 when we traded in our Prime. But they didn’t and still haven’t asked. Q4 of 2022 is late.

    That is important information for an auto company and better lets them know exactly who the best competitor is against their products.

    Relative to Toyota's normal cautious and thoughtful planning strategies, this seems like scrambling. Maybe for other companies it wouldn't. The idea that they are thinking about moving away from e-tgna to a new, yet to be designed pure EV platform is a bit shocking for conservative Toyota. Alerting suppliers of potential changes to the long term plan is very un-Toyota. Sure, they're a big company and tend to move slowly and purposefully. I'm thinking as you said, they're at the top right now and they want to stay there. The changes they are making look like a course correction to make sure that happens. Losing out on a potential EV wave is not something they want to experience.

    Come next year we'll see what is actually going on I guess.

    In 2019 at the Chicago Auto Show, a Toyota rep asked me who Toyota should be worried about. I said Hyundai.

    I definitely did not see the impressiveness of the e-GMP platform but was simply seeing the rise of their Ioniq lineup and how quickly it was catching up to the Prius. The interior was more Gen 2 than Gen 4 Prius but the internals were approaching Toyota’s.

    3 years from then, we have the e-GMP triplets soon to be joined by the Ioniq6 sedan. That’ll add long range to those who want it since we know sedans are more aerodynamic than SUVs (and a decent competitor to the Model 3). I suspect 350 miles city and 250 miles highway summer range real world range. (560 and 400km respectively).

    There are more details in the articles of the other thread.

    The management team Toyota assembled for this is not something they do for regular market evaluations and plan adjustments. They call it a Business Revolution(BR) group, and implement it for major changes. Around 30 hybrid, PHEV, and BEV projects were cancelled as part of this action. They're considering axing a platform, not a model, a platform, that is three years old.

    The short of it is that Toyota planned on a slower adoption of BEVs. The eTNGA platform was developed for that projection. It could be assembled on existing production lines along side ICE models. Which would have been a fine plan, if Toyota's projections had been right. They weren't, and EV sales a climbing much faster. The car companies that invested in dedicated EV platforms and production lines now have a cost advantage over Toyota for this level of EV demand.
