Where is the VVT Oil Control Valve Located?

I've just spent a hour searching on Google and YouTube for how-to instructions on replacing the VVT oil control valve and filter. No luck.

I have the new valve in my hand but I find nothing on the motor that looks like it. Could someone post instructions or a picture showing where the valve is located?

The problem I'm trying to fix is diagnostic code P0011 and terrible gas mileage (32mpg) on an interstate highway at constant 70mph. Passing power at cruising speed appears to be mostly normal.

I've replaced the traction battery in my other Gen 2 Prius so I have a good feel for what an aging battery feels like. This vehicle is not showing any aging traction battery problems.

    The vehicle's odometer is 156k. It's a 2006.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It’s right under intake manifold #1 about 2 inches down. The valve has a connector on it and right next to it is a female hex head head bolt the filter is behind that hex head. That hex head is really on there tight btw. Had to breaker bar it and it made a really loud crack when it came loose.
Toyota likes to tighten the shite out of bolts.

I seem to remember being under the intake but yes it’s behind that hex head bolt.
Use a high quality hex socket as it is really on there. A harbor freight pos won’t cut it.

    Welcome to Priuschat!!

How many miles on your 05 ?

Curious about the need for replacement, did you throw a code or was there another reason?

Upon removal, was the old VVT filter gummed up or dirty?

Now that you've replaced, have you noticed any difference?

I made a quick video showing the location :

It's to the left. If you take off the air cleaning compartment (the thing that houses you air filter) then it's pretty easy to see. I was surprised that I did not find any videos about replacing this part on a 2nd generation Prius. Looks like it is even easier to get to on a 3rd generation Prius. I watched those videos to give me an idea.

The Gen 3 solenoid valve is located right in plain sight on top of the valve cover. If you're not seeing it, you're looking at somebody else's car.

The Gen 3 filter, however, is under one of the camshaft bearing caps. That makes it nowhere near as easy to access as the 1NZ one with its little hex plug on the side of the engine.

Thank you for the welcome. This is the video I was refering to for 3rd generation Prius. Very convenient. I watched it for ideas before replacing on my 2nd generation, I figured it would be similar just less convenient.
