I hated sitting in bumper to bumper stop and go traffic with the engine always idling.

I voted above but here is my story about why I bought my first Prius.

For my second Prius, I considered different models, but they were all Prius.

For me it was originally the combination of technology and the advantageous company car tax associated with low CO2 emission cars here in the UK
I recently bought my second Prius and that was based on liking the technology and of course the car.
The fuel economy and green issues being secondary

I really don't know why, had mine for 4 years and only put 7000 miles on her. But she looks good in the garage.

Travel a lot for work, so fuel economy, reliability, low maintenance and a good amount of tech were huge for me. I've put 16000 miles on in 5 months, I'm saving quite a big of $.

I came from driving diesels. High maintenance, low reliability. I wanted low maintenance, high reliability and the Prius was perfect.

I was getting sick and tired of going to the gas station once a week like all the other sheeple and being aggravated at pumping $50+ into the tank, only to have to repeat the same sad scene over just 7 short days later.

I can now go to the gas station once every 16+ days- and I no longer stress over the constant increases in gas prices.
I filled up today Feb 25th $32 at $3.96/gal. my previous fillup was on Feb 8th seventeen days ago :)
I could have filled up tomorrow making it 18 days between fill-ups- but it's going to rain tomorrow so I filed up today instead.
Going from a 22mpg vehicle to a 88mpg vehicle has reduced my stress level considerably...

I did too. Still own it.
But now, I have an option! I don't HAVE to drive my 13mpg beast when I don't need it!

$130 fill ups are now not weekly, but bi-monthly, thank the good Lord.

Above all, FEAR of climbing gasoline prices; I'd had a Mazdaspeed 3 in mind prior to worrying about gas prices and also looked at Ford Fusion/Lincoln MKZ Hybrids once I was resigned to shop hybrids. The Prius's estimated 44 MPG average beat those other hybrids' 34 MPG and the hatchback body with fold-down rear seat I preferred over the Ford hybrids' trunks with NO fold-down rear seat. Also, Toyota's reputation for building reliable vehicles; the Prius was proven over more years of service than the Fords and it was a clean-sheet, optimized design, rather than the adapted conversion of a standard sedan.

Reliability was a big thing for me. I don't have time or money to be nursing two older vehicles through garage visits... I will do that for the truck  but the beater Hyundai I had got booted out the door with the rest of the baggage from my "old life."

I knew Prii were good on fuel but what I've been able to do with mine floored me. I've been told mine's a nice "fashion accessory" as well with the color I picked out.

    Kool Aid, anyone?;)
