But you can't have both performance AND gas mileage... You WILL get more power, though. I'm going to add a 'defeat' switch to restore MPG when not needed...

Personally I thought the "Q" Tip analogy was spot on!

That would depend on where the patients head was at the time of the operation.:D

It amazes me that real people think a two wire 'chip' or a 'bent aluminum tube' intake are likely to be superior to Toyota's engineers' solution.

if you can fool the ecu into thinking the engine is cooler than it really is, it will richen the mixture a bit. stochiometry (sic)? isn't the best mixture for power; most race cars run like 12-1 air fuel ratio to get more power, so you can get more hp, but mpg will most definitely suffer.
on the "bent aluminum pipe", toyota wanted the motor to be quiet more than they were looking for extra power, and you know they didn't expect prius drivers to be concerned about performance. cai does work on otto cycle; it is possible it can work on atkinson. unless we have some genuine engineers with expertise in atkinson cycle, there is no way anyone can say whether it works or doesn't until we get some sort of test going. butt dyno not withstanding.

As much as 1/3 of liter of fuel/air mixture, is going to come back out of the cylinder during the compression stroke.

This will of course be hot air, not cold air, so no one is going to achieve a cold air intake on a Prius.

If you try to make a 'shorty' intake, you are going to spew fuel/air back through the air filter and mess up the fuel/air ratio. This throws a code, and puts you in limp mode. "Butt Dyno" will still be impressed as they can "hear the power." Sigh.

jimbopalmer is no fan of the CAI or short intake. ;)To each his own. I will continue to stand by my claims that resonator removal results in smoother acceleration. just as much as he will stand by his claims that it won't. I have no problem with that. I value his opinion and input. Even if I don't necessarily agree. I thought the q-tip comment was funny. I've seen JET Performance advertising a ECU reprogram but it's to much money for me to justify. I'm glad that we have priuschat to share our thoughts and ideas. too bad the FNG took it personally.

    shorty intake = bad idea.
1/3 L might be substantially less than the volume of the intake manifold; i don't know the actual size of the intake and i bet no one else here does. at any given rpm, how would we know how far the intake charge is actually pushed back up the manifold, or if its just sucked right into the next cylinder? i would very much like to know what kind of manifold vacuum these motors achieve. the cai may reduce the temperature inside the intake, without scientific testing sufficient to please maestro8, we'll never really know. all we got is the possibility of a drag race. Dave, i will be heading up to damascus tomorrow evening; any chance we could drag around 6-7pm? i will be driving my maroon '04. it has no mods other than thm rear and corolla front sway bars. (frankly, i think the '05 might be a little quicker-- might have better software in the ecu?)

So long as you keep plenty of volume, I am not opposed to reduced restriction. That fifth link above says it all, I think. Leaving the volume of the stock air box, even with no filter in it, solves his problem. Folks used to the Otto cycle are not choosing wisely for an Atkinson cycle engine.

(I actually have threads where I track ambient temperature and under hood temperature. I think I needed cooler air in my Gen 2 when it was over 95 degrees at my humidity. Intake air temp rises much faster than ambient over 95. I bypassed the throttle body 'coolant' loop as icing is not an issue in MS)

I can't I'm in Hagerstown with friends tonight. I immediately thought to ditch those plans and head to Damascus but then I remembered that this is the Saturday before Halloween and cops will be everywhere. They may not appreciate our experiment. I guess we'll have to plan for another time.

tracking air temp is a good start, but we'd need readings from inside the intake, not just underhood air. it would help to graph IAT along w/ ambient and underhood, with and without CAI. if we could get actual manifold air temp and vacuum, even better.

Just got back from Hagerstown, surprisingly only spotted two cops and no sobriety checkpoints. 69shovelhead hope you had a good time in Damascus, and hope all members of priuschat had a good Saturday. Now we east coasters need to get ready for hurricane Sandy, I really think it's going to blow out to sea, but I've been wrong before. Better safe than sorry right?

Changing the radio antenna to increase performance? You know the door handles stick out quite a bit, you might delete those. *snicker*

All he has to do is sneeze during that lap and he'll lose a dozen milliseconds.

Maybe he should do a "nose delete" mod while he's at it...
