I have a 2017 advanced and it has a spin on filter. Next time you do an oil change buy one as well as the canister and see if you can spin it on. If not, take it back and use the canister. If so use it and take the canister back

They made that change in mid 2017. My earlier model has the canister filter. I don't find the canister any harder than the spin-on, and sometimes the spin-on can be harder.

My 2010 is a canister. They both have their ups and downs. I personally prefer the canister because it seems to be less messy, but then again, we only need to change oil about once a year so it's not a huge deal.

Thanks for the clarification on the change. I guess mines 2017.5

One thing good about canister is that you know the oil filter wrench you have used before works, since it is the same canister for the life of the car. With spin-on, I had compatible aftermarket oil filters not fitting to the oil filter wrench for OEM filter I owned.

I'm pretty sure you can't use a spin-on, on a car that came with cannister, without, changing parts. More info:

That's correct. It's pretty simple to convert and not very expensive. But I like the positive feel of the wrench on the canister cap and not having to fiddle with getting a grip on the spin-on.

I'd guess the spin-on is the same size?

The same 12 face 64mm is used by Honda*, and: our son's CX-5 factory filter was slightly bigger (maybe 67mm?), but when I went to dealership and bought replacement, it too was 64 mm.

    * Honda used to use a significantly larger oil filter, and the 64mm was for motorcycles. I had one of each, and now use the motorcycle socket for any and all.

I bought a cheap pair of Walmart Rhino ramps - they're strong ramps, but the angle is too steep to accommodate the Prius. The air dam wants to push the ramps forward.

So I built a little lift to give me a lower angle of attack. It only takes a couple inches to make them work. If you have some extra lumber and screws you can quickly make a couple lifts. I used a couple pressure treated fence pickets on a 2 x 4, with some bracing to mate the lifts to the Rhinos. Works really well.

Everything is so competitive these days. Most people would be shocked to learn that the painter they hired to apply that expensive Sherwin Williams "Duration" paint, had the right cans but the wrong paint. It's amazing how often the wrong materials end up in the right packaging. The automotive business is notorious for that, but rarely at the corporate level. It usually happens at the end-user, or one step up. Anything we can do to protect ourselves is worth doing.
