Hey! I know it's been asked before but there are a million opinions. My 12v battery just died in my 2008 Prius. Do you have any recommendations for a battery or at a minimum can direct me to a specific battery that would work?
Does Walmarts brand Everstart work and are they reliable?

      Thank you so much!

The length and breadth of my 12 volt battery knowledge is pretty limited. That said, id look for specs similar to the Toyota battery, which is usually Yuasa. It might be specd in owners manual, not sure. Anyways, it’s roughly 325 CCA, and relatively high amp hours, maybe 45? And it’s AGM type. Up here I’d be looking at Canadian Tires Prius battery, or the dealership one. .

Physical configuration is important too, length, width, and height is crucial, since Toyota’s hold-down bracket is completely intolerant of height variation. If you’re going to be swapping in a parking lot have a few washers, to shim as needed.

Also needs the skinny Japanese posts, oriented correctly, ditto for the vent.

Prices are through the roof last time I checked

(PITA character limit is cause of triple post, hopefully haven’t lost anything)

I appreciate reading your posts in expectation of inspection and cleaning of the EGR and intact tract. Just to make sure, you are of the opinion that one can remove the two horizontal studs and not replace them after the job is done? Or just the rear one that is so difficult to get at? Thanks.
      1. Mendel Leisk
        Mendel Leisk
I would only remove the lower cooler stud permanently, since access is so difficult. You also do need to remove both the nut and stud at the EGR valve, temporarily, ditto for the bolt through top bracket of cooler, and the two nuts at rear, connecting to exhaust manifold. Since those two side studs are removed you don’t need to remove the studs at exhaust manifold.

Mendel you can probably identify this issue! I have a 2011 Prius and on January 20th of this year, this loud hum noise started http://link.www.ridesharedriver.blog/Prius_hum_noise. That is from a mic on the "Shotgun seat" While I am driving on Interstate 275 in Tampa, FL. The noise is very loud in the car. When I get over to the left or make a left turn the noise goes away. What do you think?

      Thanks,

      Sean

Does it change pitch with speed? What’s the miles? Original wheel bearings?

Maybe start a thread, include above info.

The pitch does change a little. I think it is the catalytic converter. There are 543,000 miles on the car. The wheel bearings have been replaced twice, There is a detailed maintenance log at my website.

Look, I'll wait a bit. My left shoulder is "fubar" or " comminuted, compacted, 4 part, fracture of the proximal humerus " to be accurate. It will take about 3 months to heal.

Hi Mendel....this is Bill from Seattle. Do you ever drive south down to my area? I am close to Everett. Would be nice to meet for lunch! I love to talk Prius....you seem pretty knowledgeable. Many years ago I went to a racetrack for a sports car race....I think the track was near Coquitlam or Mission....is that right?

Ah just noticed this. I’ve got a passport, but haven’t been across the border in, well, forever. Our kids are the opposite, for trader Joe and gas. Racetrack was taken out long ago; suburban sprawl over grew everything here

      Mendel,
Any Idea where I can find the layout or specs for placing the side door guard moldings on a Gen 4 standard Prius?
      1. Mendel Leisk
        Mendel Leisk
Sorry, no. This is a Toyota accessory, a side moulding held on by adhesive? You’ve tried googling?

      Mr Mendel,

What voltage should my 12v be in? I was checking for codes with OBD the other day and my app said my 12v had 11.8v while it was on the on position checking for codes (pressed on twice) not running/started. Let me know if that's too low.
      1. Mendel Leisk
        Mendel Leisk
At least 12 volt. I’d be concerned if I saw anything lower than 12.5

You have a 10, would you buy another?
Would you mind looing at my "What to buy" post in Gen II?
BC is da best. Spent time in Squamish this winter. Best compliment I got was that I was the most Canadian American the people in the car had met. I blushed, I love that country. Originally from VT. Daughter in on V Island for a while this summer.

Hi Mendel , sorry to bother you but, I am changing the sway link bars on my car. Part number Toyota 4882047030. Are they in pairs or is it the same part for both left and right ? Or are there different parts for left and right? Thanks for your help.

Mendel, news blurbs are stating that the fires from Canada are burning from the west to the east with the east side of Canada affecting the Eastern side of the U.S. Are there fires in the northern regions of where you live? Just trying to comb thru the fiction and facts.

Hi Mendel, I appreciate your comments on my coolant mystery leak awhile back.
My next big task with my car will be to fix the AC system, there's a leak somewhere.
Wondering if you'd be so kind as to share some repair manual pdfs if you have any.
      Thank you, Carsten

I’ve looked, but stumped. Lots of miles. The head gasket looks like Toyota (at the least not a blue FelPro) , with virtually all the coating missing on intake side, and failure between one and two cylinders (the usual).

You rock! I'm going to tackle the EGR cleaning process, and I'm going to Menards to buy some tools and didn't know if you had advice on what to buy to help remove the clamps and hoses?

        Mendel Leisk
There’s special pliers for pulling off hoses. For how infrequently I need them, I’ve never got around to getting them though. I did post a hose removal tip in your thread; what works for me.

Hi Mendel I got my brakes needed from an ordinary mechanic. He did it like they normally do. I have a Prius v 2012. They did not put it invalid mode or anything. So what am I missing or was it worth it. Just did not have time to do it. Should I get it done again from Toyota?
